Intellectual property: Patents against prosperity | The Economist

When I hear about the concept behind this type of business plan it sounds morally wrong. The companies that engage in this type of patenting behavior grow in number and revenue for a reason, it makes them money. Regrettably at the cost of the consumer and innovation. So when I hear about raising taxes or user fees for education and transportation infrastructure it sounds great. I am a believer in the pay to play paradigm. My problem is that we as a nation, and a citizenry are not getting what we are paying for. Unions, management, contractors, I am not sure who to blame. The truth is that there will be someone who will attempt to short circuit the process, be financially successful, and go unpunished in the name of "market forces of supply and demand".
